Facebook’s latest privacy lapse has exposed over 400 million user records on a server that wasn’t protected with a password. TechCrunch reports today that each record contained a user’s Facebook ID and the phone number linked to their account. The server included records across several databases, including 133 million records for US Facebook users, as well as records for 18 million UK users and over 50 million users in Vietnam....

Facebook is testing a new feature designed to protect profile photos from being downloaded. The aim is to make women in particular feel more comfortable about uploading their photo to the service. Some scammers harvest photos from Facebook, especially those of women, for use in ads or dating frauds. When a user chooses to protect their photo, other people will no longer be able to download or share it. Additionally, you can choose to overlay a texture onto the photo, which Facebook research has found makes photos less likely to be misused....

The US Federal Trade Commission is opening an investigation looking into whether Facebook misused the personal data of its users. Bloomberg reports this morning via an anonymous source that the FTC will be probing Facebook and its involvement with Cambridge Analytica. The investigation will seek to find out if the social service broke a consent decree with how it used personal data. TechCrunch received numerous screenshots and documents outlining a brand new iPhone app from Facebook focused solely on photo sharing. The program is allegedly code-named either “Hovertown” or “WithPeople” and could be released either as a standalone download for iOS devices or integrated into Facebook’s existing iPhone app. Author MG Siegler says the screenshots look “amazing”, adding: With an astounding six billion photo uploads each month and a total of staggering hundred billion photos (or about 150 photos per user on average), a photo sharing app from Facebook would easily become a smash hit....

Facebook’s Safety Check feature has been activated for the suicide bombing in Manchester in which 22 people lost their lives. Children were among the fatalities. The feature allows those in the area to mark themselves as safe, so that friends and family are not worried. This is particularly useful at incidents where emergency systems in cell networks can limit call volumes to keep lines of communication open for emergency responders, making it difficult or impossible to get through by phone....

Fallout 76 is getting review bombed already, despite only being released today. Fallout 76’s servers went online early, however, so some players have been able to jump online and experience the newest Bethesda-made wasteland ahead of schedule. Fallout 76 is the first entry in Bethesda’s take on the IP that features online multiplayer and a story that isn’t at least partially driven by a main solo campaign. Much has been made of the developer’s decision to dive headfirst into online content without even having had multiplayer modes for the previous Fallout titles, but in previews the game appeared to be succeeding at engaging players nonetheless....
