Popular messaging service WhatsApp has today announced its first desktop client for Mac OS X. The launch of a desktop Mac client comes a few months after the Facebook-owned service launched a web interface and a month after it rolled out end-to-end encryption for all communication. Facebook is testing a new app called The Re-Entry to help people who are transitioning from prison back into society, reports Bloomberg. This an effort by the company to “create more products for marginalized communities.” According to the report, some Instagram users saw a notification on the top of their feeds that read, “preparing for life after prison with community support.” The notification asked these users to click for early access to try the app and provide feedback, but Facebook says the notification shouldn’t have appeared to the public:...

Facebook has been thinking of new ways to keep its users engaged with the platform. Facebook announced today that it is releasing its biggest iOS SDK update yet with the release of SDK 3.0 Beta for iOS, which also includes iOS 6 integration for native Facebook login. It is also rolling out a completely refreshed iOS Dev Center with tutorials, concepts, and reference docs to help iOS app developers build great Facebook-integrated apps for iOS devices. As for iOS 6 integration, Facebook explained the new SDK would automatically support use of the native Facebook Login feature in iOS 6 once it launches, and it will continue to support the feature in beta until then....

Ahead of the highly anticipated release of Fallout 4 on November 10th, Bethesda, the company behind the game, has released a new app called Fallout C.H.A.T. While it’s not an actual messaging app, or even an actual keyboard, it’s a neat way for fans of the popular Fallout series to communicate with one another. C.H.A.T. stands for Communications Hub and Transmitter and the app itself consists of 60 different emoji characters and animated GIFs featuring the Vault Boy character....

Facebook has launched a new feature in its official iOS client called “Instant Articles,” the company announced today. The feature will allow web publishers to create versions of their stories optimized for display inside the Facebook app. As suggested by the name, these optimized articles are designed to load instantly and provide a more native-feeling experience. The articles are built using some of the same user interface elements and concepts first introduced in the alternative Facebook client, Paper, such as large images that scroll as you tilt your phone, and in-line videos that automatically start playing....

Facebook released a big update today to its recently released Paper mobile app. The app, which provides a full Facebook experience alongside a news reader-style collection of content from around the web, today integrates birthdays and events from Facebook via the app’s “notifications globe” icon.
